Been working on it since last night. I'm not really feeling what I got, to be honest. How are you guys approaching this?

I started with the accapella strictly and worked my way around it. It's a bit of a challenge. I haven't heard the original as of yet. I'm not sure if I want to neither - I think it's wisest for me to do this with an empty head of ideas and just brainstorm what I want involved, etc.

How is everyone else fairing out there? Are you guys going about the same process as me or are you using a beat you already had stashed and blending?

Well, I usually listen to the original so I kno where they took it n where I need not. I listened to Common's original Gladiator... I didn't like it. It's a battle rap, so I gate it some battle rap music. Not to mention, I might incorporate some things from the movie Gladiator in there, or some other movies that are relevant to battles n people not even standin' a chance winnin'.

I listened to the vocals already. I'll admit, at first I wondered how the flo of it was (cause I could've freaked it one of two ways). But, I think I got it now. I also was listenin' out for a key n wha other keys could I take it. That seemed like a challenge, but I think I got that covered also. So, the overall approach I'm takin' now (after I listen to the original of course) is how would I like to highlight wha she's sayin'. She's talkin' about bein' a star... n there's plenty of ideas I have for things like that. There's twinkles, there's wind, there's depth wit sounds... I'm not gonna give it all away, but u get the idea (hopefully). Once I figure that out, I figure out how I wanna swag her out (drum wise). Should it be sexy, should it be simple (dependin' on wha sounds I'm gonna use n how I'm gonna use 'em), should it have a bounce... n then take it from there.

Once I figure that out, I'm pretty straight! Whatever else comes to mind I try, n if it doesn't work I scrap. I think I'm gonna go listen to that song right now - lol! I will say this tho... the backgrounds sound like she took it to church. Not to give it a churchy feel, but u gotta do somn' along that order to make those vox stick out the way they do, otherwise they're not gonna make any sense against somn' else. But, it has to be hot. It's a relatable song, so the track has to speak the same language! I prolly just gave everyone the direction to go in just then - lmfao!

Yea, I already have down what I want to incorporate into the track as far as sounds.

Playing key to her flow is probably the most difficult part only because it's a constant change. It's definitely not no rapper 16 bar loop LMAO.

I think I really just got to sit myself down and play along her voice. Really....that is the difficult part for me at least. I'm not to savvy with orchestration with the keys. I'm more string and well...my MP LOL

But I know that after I ace that part, everything else is icing.

Are we still allowed to enter the competition if we're not able to attend?

Aiight... I couldn't find the original, but thanx to some headphone leakage I kinda get where they went wit it. It was tough to hack out, but I managed to get the idea that was botherin' me out in the open.

The main thing u need makin' this remix is the main melody. If u don't have this, u tend to get lost in the backgrounds when they pop up. Its hard to stay focused doin' drums n figurin' out certain parts when listenin' to them. U may be able to get away wit startin' wit the bass line, but then again it may slip away from u if u son't kno xactly wha u wanna do! I was gonna go far out there, but decided to keep it simple n let the edits in the instruments speak moreso for the track rather than havin' a gabillion switch-ups.

I would say this sounds like somn' Mya would mess wit. If not, hey, I gave it a shot... n if I actually heard the original like I had hoped to... maybe I would have had a better guide that would've navigated me towards wha I prolly would've ended up doin' in the first place! I think I pulled it off tho. Very curious to hear everyone else's remixes when they're done. I'm gonna get my homeboy Flame to get in on 8 bars where she drops out n I'll say a lil' somn' somn' on the end before the last chorus. The Common joint is knocked out the park. I'll post both up when I'm done mixin' them (which will prolly be in like 2-3 days... dependin' on when I get them vox back from my boy)!

Nice Beatfellaz. Honestly, I fell back on this remix to focus on doing more dancehall tracks for Mya the past few days. I won't be attending the LA event, so I'm prioritizing what I should do first.

I'll see if I can jump onto that Common Gladiator remix though. Sounds dope and I've always been a fan of Com.

Man, listening to this again, it definitely does not seem like it's 4/4 all the way through. Has anyone been able to get it to lay on a 4/4 beat without chopping it up? I'm super confused.

Thanks for the info, we'll see when I have time to get started, things have been NUTS for me lately. These remixes are going to be a bit rushed. Come to think of it, I haven't even done a remix since the fall.

I think it's just the second half of the hook that's weird. It sounds like it's a 16th note ahead of where it should be, but maybe that's just how it is. It's really pissing me off too, everyone's mix is going to be on a different beat.

Mine's basically done now, just work with the tempo 85.397 that was graciously provided by Beatfellaz, and it actually works no problem. No chopping or anything.

What beat it starts on is anyone's guess, but put it where it sounds right to you. That's all the clues I'm giving, lol.
