I recall several months ago a conversation where a few DP members were talking about low pass filters and that they use them. I wanted to experiment with low pass filtering and I notice that it asks what the cutoff frequency is. I'm assuming that the cutoff frequency is the highest frequency allowed and that any frequencies higher than that will be removed..............is that right? If so, what is a good cutoff frequency to use when eq'ing and is there a universal cutoff frequency or should there be a different one for each different kind of instrument? I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense, but I have no idea what I'm talking about lol. Any help would be greatly appeciated. Thanks fam!!

Well a low pass filter is going to cut down all the High Frequencies, so the higher you turn the knob or fader - the sound will become a lot more muddier and bass dense.

True: This is how a lot of producers used to get their basslines done way back when everyone was sampling. They would run that sample through a LoPass filter.

LPF is essentially just an EQ with slope and usually cuts anywhere from 6-24db ... it's especially useful to keep your basslines from interfering with the rest of the track. Some LPFs have a resonance setting which is essentially how much of a boost/cut is applied at the point of cutoff (frequency). Filters all have their own characteristics and can shape sounds nicely if done the right way. Old AKAI and EMU samplers were beaaaautttifull on this front.

VST stuff? Doesn't get me too excited. Use it for transparent purposes... creating room in your mixes, keeping your low mids clear.
