Ok so i don't have my monitors at the proper distance i should have them apart and away from me...but i guess i've learned how to work with it (don't have the room to adjust them)...but i was wondering how wide out in the stereo field do u pan generally? i know that it varies from song to song depending on what sounds u use and all that just curious tho.

Just gotta ear it really...put to me usually panned by 20 to each side gives it a nice decent spread.

yea i know its gotta be by ear...but we all kinda hear things differently and some want a big sound some not so big at all...i sometimes go into the mid 30's both ways...kinda maybe think'in a little wider-dunno yet

I think it depends on if you're talking about mixing a song or an instrumental. It also depends on how many tracks are in the project and how frequently each event occurs.

    I'll def check that-good look'in

Actually if u can shed some lite to both is cool to-can never have to much info-just a matter of disect'in it and absorb'in it...and yea i know it depends on the number of tracks-the less tracks the more space u have and the less widen'in u have to do unless its just a personal taste...i guess what i'm ask'in is just based on the individual and how they do on the avg ya know

Can always picture a stage in your head...with the instrument setups and your in a good distance as if it's an actual show you'd hit up. Arrange the sounds panning distance as you'd hear them at a show...this also includes distance up close and in the back...this is what I usually do.

For like backing vocals, I'm a pan hard left, hard right guy. I do it on a console and don't really bother with percentages. For instruments, besides the kick, bass and maybe snare up the middle, I'll pan other sounds to the left or right away from the lead vocal. LIke was said before, you just gotta feel it for the song. No absolute right or wrong. Just make sure there is balance.

I have to agree with Hoodmade... if its an instrumental, it might be less wide, but when i have an artist in mind, i make sure i keep only the bare minimum in the center, the give as much breathing space for the lead vocal. Also, i think its nice to cover the whole stereo field. If you have 100% on both left and right, why not use it ? Again, if the beat is a snap beat, it might not be a good idea to pan hard left/right...
