Who here does this, and how do you do it?
its a good technique to mix into a compressor to glue a mix together...using a limiter will give you an overall louder mix with less dynamic range...master bus plugs like the waves L2, C4, and Izotope Ozone all do the trick
I love UAD's Fairchild 670 compressor, but T-Racks 3 has a version of this that is super nice.
I mix into a hardware compressor. I use the Chameleon Labs 7702 which is a knock off/clone of the SSL stereo buss compressor. About 2-3 dbs of gain reduction gives me some really nice glue. And if I want it to pump I can hit it harder. For strictly in the box I use the Waves SSL stereo comp plug or UAD Fairchild, then I'll do a pseudo master with the UAD Precision Limiter. When I use the comp on the master mix, I start my mix with it on.
I've found a few that I like. The TRacks Compressor that was mentioned is awesome.
One of my favs is the one that comes with the SSL 4000 Bundle. I got it for a great price.
A few more:
PSP Vintage Warmer
The UAD Precision Multiband
URS Strip Pro
Neve 33609
I like to save money though and I always try some of the free plugins out...
For a good free one, try out the Kjaerhus Classic Compressior.
It's surprisingly decent for a free compressor. They also have a bunch of free effects available.
DL it from this site: http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/
Endorphin is pretty good too: http://www.digitalfishphones.com/mai...em=2&subItem=3
Xpressor: http://www.e-phonic.com/plugins/
3 is better than 4 though, crazy right.
and Jaay that um API 2500 joint is ok, I don't really like it, I rather use the Wave Master Fader Compressor, with the Wave stero maximizer, them together do a hell of a good job, and I posted up the Waves Mercury bundle a while back, it had all the best plugins you will ever need.
