    Sup Yall...

I'm trying to learn a few things (production wise) to add to the repertoire. I had a question about those who use or know how to use an 808 as a bassline. Do any of yall actually triggeer your 808 Kick Drum with your controller via sampler and play your kick to the KEY of your song? I would try it myself but Im having controller issues right now and was wondering if any one could offer feedback. I think Lil jon uses this technique....or at least thats what I think Im hearing.

    Thanks Guys
    Michael

i dont know what you use but this is myway of doing it.

i trigger the 808 kick drum with my controller to the key of the song. i wouldnt know how to do it any other way. im not sure what you production setup it but my setup is Reason 4.0 rewire through sonar 7, juno 106,fantom. i normally use reason's redrum for the drums but if i want the 808 kick to be my bass line i would up load it into reason's "nn-xt" sampler and play it note by note.

sorry if this doesnt answer your question. but thats how i do it.

yes and no - depends on the song - frequently yes - but many songs work with the common 808 sample that most use (which is an A flat) - its just the unique knock of the 808 - but nowadays - generally - i play it in the key of the song - but the way the pitch travels throughout the course of the sample is different than just having a kick over a single bass note - often you must play up an octave to figure out the accurate notes to play

i can give you a couple examples of each style if u want

Do you guys find yourself layering your 808 'Bass lines' with kicks (quick attacks) like u would if you were using the 808 as a kick (exclusively)? I imagine layering the 808 Bass line with a bass (with little to no low end) would work beautiful in this type of situation. Appreicate yalls help.

I usually layer an 808 or heavy low end kick over my kicks in the track...to me adds more roundness to em' and of course a more thump.

yo Michael send me your email address

what do yall use to get your 808 sound? and what method do u use to get them across all pitches?

like, is it a sample u chop us as a wave on your DAW sequencer

    or

a sample u trigger on your key & can make a kit that contains only that sample is stretched throughout the entire keyboard that stretches the pitch & not the time (like the EXS24 in logic) - or do you bang a pad on your mpc, or do you have an original Mannie Fresh 808?

I use both techniques depending on the situation
But it does not really matter which one you use, the end result being the same

    SG:

I get my 808 Drums from Goldbaby. As of now, Im using Structure inside of pro tools. Just a drag and drop and its layed out on the keys. The drums are cut already. I use the new piano edit in pro tools 8 to trigger sounds from structure. I'm gonna try the 808 KICK tonight as I layed the hats and snares/claps last night. Any thoughts?

Thats the link to what Im using as a sampler.
