Thread: Writing Tip?

For all your songwriters out there....When you write to something do you have someone in mind before you start? Do you write your lyrics first and then place it with a track?
Or do you take a beat and then write over that....and let the music lead you in the right direction?

I personally do both....but its nice to know others train of thoughts in the process. Its always good to learn new techniques.

I personally think you are going to get a better fit to write to a track but if the producer/arranger is skilled enough they can compose to your lyrics.

Since I'm a shitty singer, I really need to have the track first. The melody of the music is gonna determine the melody of the song - never vice versa for me. Because of that, I cant write to just any track. It has to move me and be hummable/singable in my tone in order for it to interest me enough to stay at it.

I'll admit, I'm not skilled enough to compose to lyrics.

I rarely think of anyone in particular if I'm writing something unless the track jumps out and immediately screams an artist's name to me or unless I get the track from someone like Fuego who already named the track after the artist that he saw fit for the track..

Thats what I mostly do too...I usually write to a track if it moves me. But there are those nights when I get frustrated or motivated to write about my feelings, and I just write. Sometimes later I take those lyrics and apply to them another beat I hear if I think it would work....Im trying to learn guitar atm so I can make my own music with those lyrics. Until then Ill just keep writing to already produced tracks.....Thanks for the input!
