For some sampleheads - who dig in the crates for that rare, obscure break - using a well known hit record is out of the question. But time and time again, others prove it to be a successful formula. In fact, the first rap record on wax - “Rapper’s Delight” - was itself a reinterpretation of Chic’s Good Times. From Bad Boy’s heyday in the 90s to Game & Lil’ Wayne’s recent use of “Kernkraft 400”, hundreds of artists have used this approach – and many times, made a great new record along the way.
Several months back, Mac Miller dropped a track called “Talk About” – sampling Simply Red’s monster 1985 hit “Holding Back the Years”. It made me think about how many times that record has been sampled and covered over the years – it’s one of those rare songs that really engages a wide spectrum of listeners.
