What’s good my fellow sample heads? Sorry for the slow post for January’s Chop Shop. Guess my New Years hangover lasted a little longer than it should have!
In 2012, we’re going to try to use samples that have been flipped more recently, instead of focusing on old school joints like we did last year. That will give us each a chance to better benchmark ourselves against current heavyweights in the game.

No doubt everyone enjoyed J Cole’s recent album Cole World: The Sideline Story. The German-born, North Carolina-raised MC put together a solid Roc Nation debut and impressed many with not only his lyrics, but also his production. Track 11, “Nobody’s Perfect”, caught my ear right away (and not just because that the first time I’ve heard Missy Elliot since Timbaland was chubby). The chopped sample stabs and rolling drum pattern made for a dope canvas – and building off a Curtis Mayfield track is always a good move.
I ‘m sure I don’t have to tell you much about Curtis Mayfield. The man is a legend, and we’ve all sampled him more than once – including previous months of the Chop Shop. The song that J Cole flipped, “Think”, comes from 1972’s Super Fly Soundtrack – which has been sampled more times than you can shake a pimp cane at.
