Michael Franks – Lady Wants to Know

    Michael Franks - Sleeping Gypsy.jpg

Michael Franks is a jazz singer and songwriter with a very deep catalogue, spanning from the early 70s to today. His 1977 Warner Brothers Album, Sleeping Gypsy, starts off the A-side with a cut entitled “Lady Wants to Know” - which opens with guitar work, key chords and light drumming. This track would become the main sample used in the Artifacts[1] 1994 single “Lower the Boom”, produced by T-Ray[2].

[1] The Artifacts were a really ill crew from Jersey that made great records but never really blew. They were real representatives of hip-hop – not just MCing but especially graffiti writing. If you’re not familiar, check ‘em out.

[2] T-Ray is easily one of Hip-Hop’s most underrated producers of the 90s. He’s worked with everybody from Kool G Rap to Carlos Santana. Again, it’s worth your while to get familiar.
