The Jeff Lorber Fusion – Rain Dance
‘Smooth Jazz’ is not that the first section of the record store one would come to when digging for Hip-Hop breaks. But as evidenced by The Jeff Lorber Fusion, dope breaks can come in any genre[1].
Jeff Lorber is a successful artist/keyboardist from Philadelphia, who came on the scene in 1977 with an accessible, yet well respected style. His group’s 1979 album Water Sign - featuring jazz legends Freddie Hubbard and Joe Farrell[2]– boasted 8 tracks of melodic, key-driven jazz, including a song called “Rain Dance” – which would form the basis for Lil Kim’s 1996 hit record "Crush on You" (produced by Fanatic).

[1] This is only one example - Jeff Lorber’s “Night Love” was sampled for Jay-Z’s “Who You Wit II”. Not bad for a guy who introduced Kenny G to the world, no? (On his 1980 LP Wizard Island.)
[2]Freddie Hubbard and Joe Farrell have had plenty of their music sampled BTW. Ill breaks from both of these dudes.
