Grant Green (1935-1979) was a highly influential, if not critically acclaimed, jazz guitarist who recorded almost 30 albums for the legendary Blue Note label.

His 1970 release “Alive!” featured only 5 tracks, recorded live – but over 37 minutes of hard jazz-funk fusion. The last track - "Down Here on the Ground" - opens with funky horns, keys and hard drums (courtesy of Idris Muhammad, an accomplished artist and sample source in his own right) before leading into an extended guitar solo. This track later became the main sample in two classic Hip Hop records, A Tribe Called Quest’s “Vibes and Stuff”[1] and Cypress Hill’s “Stoned is the Way of The Walk”.[2]

[1]Q-Tip, as part of the Ummah production collective with J-Dilla and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, also remixed the song, featuring Dianne Reeves, as part of the 1996 The Blue Note Remix Project Volume 1.
[2]Somewhat appropriate too –as Q-Tip and DJ Muggs are the most criminally under-appreciated geniuses of the era in my opinion.
