no, you don't necessarily need a lawyer to start up a publishing company. as long as you have a song to publish, it's pretty easy to set one up. it's free at ascap, $250 at bmi, don't know about sesac. i'm not sure if you have to have an already established company or if you can start one just under yourself. if it's a company, you will be asked to supply a tax eid number, if it's individual, you'll be asked for a ssn.

if you're publishing other writers, make sure you have everything in writing. split sheets, publishing agreements, that stuff. when it comes to the details, you may need a lawyer. but if you can't afford it, there's plenty of resources online to get you by or you can always ask in here. hope that helps!

amen on paragraph 2 that Infinite wrote

BMI = $200 last I checked - but if you know people there - or know people that know people - they might wave the fee altogether - they did for me

you can have a dedicated pub company, or setup your LLc/Corp for your production co (or label) & make your pub co "a division of" your LLC - that's what I did

if u want a lawyer to work for you - there is no way around the charge - good luck with that negotiation

are you looking for a lawyer? (or team of them as your post suggests)? what is your main objective?
