So we hear you're based in Armenia but originally from New York? Tell us about the transition?
Huge transition. I was born in Armenia, but left when I was almost 2 years old. Lived in Queens, NY all my life. I came here on vacation with my family for the first time since I left in the summer of 2007. I don’t want to get into my past life too much, being that it’s not the point of the interview, but to basically “change my life” I had to move out of New York for sure. When I visited Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, I decided to stay. I definitely don’t regret my decision, being that I was able to graduate High School which was looking impossible for me in NY, and even enroll myself into nursing school, building an excellent foundation for myself in the future.
As for the transition, I must say it was extremely difficult. Knowing only a few words in Armenian, I had to learn the language first, and then try to learn how to survive out here. I came here at 15, and I’ll be turning 18 in a few months. The first year and a half was spent graduating school, and taking care of my late grandmother, who I was living with, but sadly passed away last August. When I say taking care of her, I really meant taking care of her. She had all sorts of health problems from arthritis to cancer which was the cause of her death. I felt like I was taking care of 10 babies, doing everything from changing diapers to making food, at first paying people to give her a shower, and then ending up doing it myself after they quit. Anyone who knew me at that point in my life including my parents, would never imagine me looking forward to a successful music career, and progressing so much in such a short amount of time.
All this weight on my shoulders and the best and craziest part about it is that I didn’t continue my music career in Armenia. I started it here.
